Card of the Week – Runic Armasaur

Runic Armasaur - M19 - Banner

Commander is a game of resource management… I think I have started like this before. Card Draw has featured several times on previous articles, because it is such a core aspect of the game. Runic Armasaur is a card draw engine on a Dinosaur body, making it the Card of the Week.

Let’s be honest, being a Dinosaur makes this card better

The oracle text can be found here.

If you are anything like me you still think Dinosaurs are cool, and want to run more of them in Magic. However, if you instead prefer to judge a card of its actual abilities you still won’t be disappointed. For 1GG you get a 2/5 Creature, while this stat line isn’t the best it is still an effective blocker. However it’s text box is all upside. Whenever an opponent activates an ability of a creature or a land that isn’t a mana ability you may draw a card. There are a myriad of creatures with activated abilities that see regular play, Sakura-Tribe Elder for example. Additionally popular Commanders such as Kenrith, Sisay and Chulane all have activated abilities on them.

Runic Armasaur’s ability to draw from non-mana abilities on Lands is also more fruitful than it sounds. Whenever an opponent cracks a fetch land you will be able to draw. As well as for each activation of a Rouge’s Passage, Kessig Wolf Run or Hall of Heliod’s Generosity.

The only real downside to Runic Armasaur is that is a creature and therefore the easiest permeant type to deal with. Unlike a card draw engine on an enchantment like Insight, this is unlikely to stick around for the whole game. However overall it’s a mana efficient card that can provide huge value.

Suggested Commanders

The requirements to run Runic Armasaur are very low, you just need to be running Green. As it profits of what your opponents are doing, it is safe to run it in any deck looking to draw some cards. It is at it’s best in decks that focus on creatures and run other creature payoffs. Any of the Gruul commanders could benifit from the card draw as could Selesyna ones. It would also work well in a deck interested in copying permeants as it is non legendary.

Its best commander is Doran the Siege tower due to his high defence, but you really want to run it in Gishath, Sun’s Avatar and go full Dinosaur tribal.
